Return to Candidates

Bernie Sanders is a current U.S. Senator from Vermont. He announced his candidacy on February 19, 2019.

"Q: Would you support the renewable fuel standard something that is very important here in Rural America?"

"Yes I would. Look, it goes without saying that climate change is one of the great crises facing this country and we got to figure out ways that rural america can play a positive role in fighting climate change and creating sustainable non-fossil fuels." - Union County Fairgrounds, IA 7-20-19

"If we are serious about combating climate change we need to move to sustainable energy we need to move to wind to need to move to  solar we need to move to biofuels. We need research and development to make sure that we are producing in the most effective way possible the biofuels that will help this country. We don't need to exempt large corporations from biofuels. we need to protect family farms, we need to do a lot of research, Cellulosic alcohol and so forth."

- Grinnell IA, 12-6-19

"Q: One thing that can be done is, Trump’s passed a bunch of small refinery exemptions to damage the Renewable Fuel Standard (Bernie: Yes). And I hope as president, would you commit to making that transparent (Bernie: I would) process.
Bernie: "Absolutely, we’re looking at all forms of sustainable energy. And by the way, Iowa deserves a lot of credit for being one of the leaders in the county in terms of wind energy. And you’re right, biofuels is another tool that we have. We gotta expand that and improve it."

- Indianola Iowa, 12-8-19

"Q: Two years ago the biodiesel tax credit lapsed, something very important here in rural iowa. Will you commit to a multi-year biodiesel tax credit so that companies trying to work towards fixing the climate can actually plan ahead of time?
Yes, I would. Look, when we’re talking…I know how important biofuels are here to Iowa, including wind and other things you’re trying to do. We are serious about breaking our dependency on fossil fuels. We want to use all the sustainable type energies that we can. We need more research to increase the efficiency of biofuels, correct? Yes, absolutely, so the answer is yes. " - Winterset IA, 12-30-19

"Let me be very honest, unlike the current president I do not believe that climate change is a hoax, I believe it is an existential threat to our country and the entire world. And that is why I strongly support the green new deal which will create up to 20 million jobs. Transforming our energy system away from fossil fuel (toward) efficiency and sustainable energy and that is why I have introduced the most comprehensive climate change legislation ever introduced by any presidential campaign in the history of the United States of America. Now I believe strongly in sustainable energy and I want to applaud the people of iowa for leading the country in terms of wind energy, you have 35 percent of your electricity from wind thats creating good jobs for America. Under my administration we will significantly increase funding for wind, for solar, for biofuels. We’re going to have an energy standard which will encourage with research and development into the most efficient biofuels we can, so biofuels and other sustainable energy is exactly the direction we have got to go." 11-2-19

"If we are serious about combating climate change we need to move to sustainable energy we need to move to wind to need to move to solar we need to move to biofuels.
